New Protea Hotel planned to open in Lusaka by 2021

Protea Hotels by Marriott is opening a new hotel in Zambia with a major, standalone amphitheater.

Developed in partnership with local business giant Union Gold Zambia Limited, the Protea Hotel by Marriott Estate, will be in Lusaka.

At 241 rooms, it will be the largest Protea hotel in the country and the brand’s ninth with Union Gold Zambia. Set within a new upmarket lifestyle hub, the hotel will be near the Kenneth Kaunda international airport and major city landmarks. It will also have a standalone, 2,000 seat amphitheater that Protea says will be aimed at large events and launches.

Protea Hotels by Marriott, Marriott International vice president Volker Heiden said that the hotel’s planned facilities are geared to provide needed amenities for the city, including additional conference venues, high-end food and beverage services, and a spa. He also said the amphitheater will work to attract mega events to the destination.

Chairman of Union Gold Zambia Mark O’Donnell  said that the country has been under-serviced in the rollout of tourist infrastructure for many years, and that the new hotel would meet the rising demand for quality lodging in the destination.

The new hotel will be located within Bonanza Estate, a newly launched estate which is set amidst an 18-hole golf course designed by Peter Matkovich. This is expected to attract major international golf tournaments and emerge as a key attraction for leisure travels and golf enthusiasts. This resort style hotel development will comprise of comprehensive food and beverage venues, conferencing, spa and recreational facilities.

Bonanza Estate is close to the international airport and to the Multi-Facility Economic Zone – an initiative of the Zambian and Japanese governments and is set to become the new emerging centre for business.

Construction of the hotel is scheduled to commence towards the beginning of 2019 with a targeted opening in 2021.
