LOCAL FIRM TO BUILD $2 MILLION CROP IRRIGATION DAM IN LUFWANYAMA

A Local firm has proposed to construct a USD $2 million crop irrigation dam on Luswishi Dam in Lufwanyama District on the Copperbelt Province for crop irrigation.

Luswishi Green Investments Limited has submitted an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report to the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) for review.

The proposed project site is located 80 kilometeres North of Lufwanyama in Chief Shibuchinga’s area.

The company stated in the EIA report that the dam wil be used for irrigation purposes and this will enhance agricultural productivity In the area.

“The dam will have a surface area of 97.5 hectares, a catchment area of 129 kilometre and a throwback of 3.3 kilometres” the report read in part.

The dam will have an earth embankment that can hold 3.7 million cubic metres of water on full supply level and a life span of 99 years.

The project would involve the construction of an earth dam with masonry cascade service spillaway, construction of access roads, installation of diameter pipes, abstraction of water for irrigation and waste management.
