INVEST IN RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT, ZACA URGES LOCAL FIRMS

ZAMBIA Consumer Association (ZACA) has urged local manufacturers to invest n research and development in order to compete with international brands on he market.

Speaking in an interview with the Sunday Times, ZACA Executive Director Juba Sakala says without research and development, it is difficult for Zambian manufacturers to compete with foreign brands.

Sakala says a few stand-outs were already leading the way in producing locally made goods that were pushing foreign brands off the shelves in Zambian supermarkets.

“We have companies like Zambeef and Trade Kings who have shown the way and others can emulate them. The produ88ucts of the two companies are top-flight, explaining why they have displaced most imported products,” he says.

He says a commitment to research and development was the only sure way in which local companies could hope to stay in touch with the ever changing market demands and remain competitive.

He adds that government could help in terms of incentives in local manufacturers like tax waivers on half of the imported raw materials.

He says putting up incentives will results in lower costs but the benefits will be shown in more jobs and quality affordable goods that could compete with foreign brands.
