GOVERNMENT says it is targeting a revenue collection in excess of USD $120 million from Mpulungu Port after expansion after expansion and moderation of the facility’s infrastructure.

Ministry of National Development Secretary Chola Chabala says the expansion and modernization of infrastructure is aimed at increasing access to the Great Lakes Region (GLR) markets.

Chabala says about USD $34 million had been raised from the port in form of revenue, but in the coming years, government projects a revenue collection base of more than USD $120 million after modernization.

Chabala says Mpulungu Port has a huge market potential, which if well exploited, could boost government’s revenue because the facility is a gateway to the huge population to the GLR market.

“If we can remove all barriers or challenges, I can assure you Honourable members we can raise more than USD $120 million in revenue for government from Mpulungu Port that’s why we want to ensure its fully modernized,” he says.

Chabala said this when he was making a submission before the Parliamentary Select Committee on Transport, Works and Supply on Tuesday chaired by Chirundu law maker Douglas Syakalima on Water Transportation System in Zambia.
