LOCAL COMPANY TAKES ZAMBIA’S DIGITAL REVOLUTION BY STORM

Posted by David Ngenda on Fri 13 May, 2016

Zambia has since the beginning of the 21st century experienced rapid transformation to join the rest of the world in the digital age.

The digital or information age, is believed to have been kick started by the introduction of the personal computer (PC) in the 1970s with the technology such as digital record keeping that followed shortly after providing the ability to transfer information quickly. The main characteristic of the digital age is a shift from ordinary trade and mechanical manufacturing brought on by the industrial revolution to information and computer centred economies.

WORLD WIDE WEB

The introduction of the World Wide Web in the 1990s enabled the information based economy to span across the globe and revolutionise the production, and services industries hence exponentially increasing efficiency while lowering cost via increased throughput on assembly lines, automation and faster information processing.

While Zambia has struggled to fully industrialise its economy, it has made headway in keeping up with the digital revolution when it switched its television transmission from analogue to digital terrestrial broadcasting in June last year. However, the hype surrounding digital broadcasting has been somewhat muted by the increasingly popular and ever evolving digital printing.

large format digital printing

Digital printing is basically printing from a digital-based image directly onto any type of media including glass, paper, marble, metal, marble among others.

The key difference between digital printing and traditional methods such as lithography, or letterpress is that replacing of printing plates is eliminated in the former resulting in higher efficiency and lower costs for both the customer and the printer.

“Digital printing allows for on-demand printing, image modifications such as colour enhancements and a much shorter turnaround time meaning you will get your work faster and just the way you want it,” says George Hawke, operations Manager at DigiPrint, Lusaka based digital printing company and distributor of world renowned Xerox high-tech printing and office equipment.

XEROX X1000 PRINTER

“Although there are various types of machinery that can be used to produce digital printouts, high speed Xerox printing presses with automated colour quality suite tools like the ones at DigiPrint deliver better quality work via vibrant colour, monochrome or highlight colour and exceptional productivity to give the client full control on how they want their image to come out. We are the only company in Zambia with the XEROX X1000. This machine produces outstanding mid-tones, crisp text, pure neutrals, detailed shadows, bright highlights while offering amazing rendering options” Hawke says.

“Our success has come from consistent delivery of superior printed materials, print process innovation, use of future focused Xerox print technology and a highly qualified team dedicated to the digital print industry and the clients we support.”

DigiPrint through its partnership with Xerox has helped modernise Zambia’s printing industry by introducing state-of- the-art equipment like the Xerox Monochrome copiers and printers with industry leading speeds of up to 95 pages per minute onto the Zambian market. These devices offer production print, copy, scan and advanced finishing capabilities that allow production of innovative, diverse and outputs of international standards.

Our goal at DigiPrint is not only to provide our clients with the best service when it comes to small and/or medium scale printing and photocopying jobs like NRCs copying, printing of brochures, books, magazines and business cards among others, but also help propel Zambia’s printing industry to the next level by supplying the local market with the latest high-tech printing equipment from one of the world’s leading manufacturers of digital printing hardware,” concludes Hawke.

Zambia has made a lot of progress in the digital sphere in the last decade which has spurred tremendous entrepreneurship growth from small web developers to large scale digital printers. As the country seeks to diversify its economy from mining, the digital revolution may prove to be one of the best tools to achieving this and digital printing is a small but nonetheless important component of that.
